During Your Hardwood Installation
When you schedule a hardwood installation, your team will arrive at their scheduled time to go over the project and prepare for the day. You can help by cleaning up the space, removing furniture, and ensuring that your family is away from the installation sites for their safety. This will allow them to begin the installation in a timely manner.Â
After Your Hardwood InstallationÂ
Once your hardwood is installed, you may be advised to stay off it for a period to allow the materials to settle. You're also encouraged to open a few windows and run a fan to remove any unwanted smells that might have resulted from the installation.
Understanding Hardwood Installation Methods
Choosing the right hardwood installation method is key to the longevity and beauty of your new floors. At Carpets of Dalton, we want to ensure your selection matches your home’s structural needs. There are three primary ways our recommended installers secure your hardwood:

Nail-Down Hardwood Installation
In this most common method for solid hardwood floors, planks are fastened to a wood subfloor using specialized flooring nails or cleats. Provides a rock-solid feel underfoot and is ideal for the traditional crawlspace or basement homes found throughout North Georgia.

Glue-Down Hardwood Installation
Frequently used for installing engineered hardwood, this method involves adhering the planks directly to the subfloor with a strong, flexible adhesive. Often the preferred installation choice for homes with concrete slab foundations, as it provides excellent stability.

Floating Hardwood Installation
In a floating floor system, the planks are not attached to the subfloor but are instead clicked together. Fast, efficient, and allows wood to expand and contract naturally, this versatile option can be installed over many different types of existing subfloors.
Subfloor & Moisture Prep for North Georgia Slab Homes
Many modern homes in Dalton, Chatsworth, and the surrounding areas are built on concrete slabs. Since concrete is porous, it can hold moisture that may damage hardwood over time. Proper subfloor preparation is our top priority for a lasting result.
Prior to your new hardwood installation, the subfloor must be clean, level, and dry. Our professional partners perform moisture testing to ensure levels are within a safe range. In many cases, a moisture barrier or specialized underlayment is required to protect your investment from the humidity that often rises from the Georgia red clay beneath your foundation.
Hardwood Flooring Acclimation for Georgia’s Climate
Our North Georgia climate is known for its humidity and seasonal shifts. Wood is a natural material that expands and contracts based on the moisture in the air. To prevent warping, gapping, or buckling after installation, planks must acclimate to your home’s specific conditions.
We recommend delivering hardwood planks to your home at least 3 to 5 days before installation. During this time, the wood should be stored in the room where it will be installed, with the HVAC system running at normal living conditions. Planks will reach a state of equilibrium with your home’s internal climate, creating a perfect fit that lasts for generations.
